This tender, aromatic annual herb was introduced to the West from East India in 1703 an its native habitat extends to South East Asia. In India it is known as the Tulsi Plant, which means "the incomparable one," and is venerated in many Hindu traditions as a sacred plant. While Holy Basil has some culinary value, it is generally recognized for its diverse medicinal properties. It bears pale purple flowers and its soft, gray-green foliage has a pleasant, camphor-like fragrance.

Bushy plant grows 2 to 3 feet and prefers full sun and well-drained garden loam. Zones 9 through 11; can be grown in pots and planters.
