Meriwether Lewis recorded collecting this flower June 1, 1806, "on the steep sides of the fertile hills" northeast of Kamiah, Idaho. It was named for William Clark, co-captain of the expedition. This showy annual, with bright satiny pink to lavender, funnel-shaped flowers, was popular in American seed catalogs of the mid 19th century. 1 to 2 feet high, spreading habit. A good cut flower. Prefers full to part sun, well drained soil. Sow indoors or directly in the garden.
