Thomas Jefferson planted seeds of the Cardinal Flower in a Monticello oval flower bed in 1807. This native perennial produces brilliant scarlet flowers on four-foot high stalks from mid to late summer. Cardinal flowers thrive in very moist, partially-shaded sites but are also satisfactory in full sun if the soil is not too dry. Plant the tiny seeds on the surface of pots or seed flats, then transplant seedling two feet apart during the growing season. Cardinal Flower was recommended for flower gardens by Bernard McMahon, in his American Gardener's Calendar (1806).
