This showy native perennial, introduced to Britain in 1626, was recommended for garden use by Jefferson's nurseryman friend, Bernard McMahon, in The American Gardener's Calendar, 1806. Jefferson recorded planting Cardinal Flower in one of the oval flower beds near the house at Monticello in 1807. At one time the cardinal flower was used by Native American Indians as a root tea for treating stomach aches, typhoid and other diseases.

Hardy North American, summer-flowering perennial.
Brilliant scarlet flowers spikes above deep, blue green basal rosette of foliage.
Prefers part shade and rich, moist soil; can tolerate full sun if provided with ample moisture.
Grows 2 to 3 feet high.
USDA Zones 4 through 8.
